Knit For Peace Workshop Schedule 2016
Knitwear designer, Jane Crowfoot, has been a strong supporter of Knit for Peace. Having led a successful Knit for Peace Holiday to Mysore this year, she has finalised her plans to also lead a really exciting knitting and crochet workshop programme, which will start in June at our HQ in London. We are really excited about the tutors and subjects that she has lined up for these workshops. Below you will find more details of each workshop that has been scheduled. Workshop Subject: Finishing Techniques For Hand Knitters
Tutor: Jane Crowfoot
Date: Wednesday 22nd June
This workshop will show participants how to get a really neat finish on all their knitting projects. Participants will be shown how to sew mattress stitch on a variety of seams and how to get a really neat pick up along a neck edge. Jane will talk about the importance of tension and will also cover increasing and decreasing, along with other professional tips and techniques along the way.
Participants need to bring along 4 stocking stitch pieces for use in the class as follows:
4 pieces worked in stocking stitch – 26sts wide x 34 rows deep
All samples should preferably be worked in a good quality DK yarn such as Rowan Wool Cotton using 4mm needles*. Participants should bring the yarn used to make the sample pieces to the workshop along with a pair of 3.25mm & 4mm knitting needles and a notebook and pen/pencil. A small sewing kit including scissors, a knitters sewing needle, and a fine sewing needle and thread is also required.
* If you are aware that you are a tight or loose knitter please alter the needle size accordingly.
Workshop Subject: Fun with Crochet – How to work in a freeform way
Tutor: Jane Crowfoot
Date: Saturday 2nd July
This is a fun workshop with the aim of helping participants to have the confidence to play with their crochet techniques and work in a more freeform way. Participants will make a small crochet piece without the aid of a pattern, which they could use as a key charm, bag decoration or brooch. Various techniques will be shown including bullion stitch, frills, loops and beading.
Yarn and beads will be provided, but it is much more fun if participants also bring along a few bits and bobs from their stashes to use in their projects – fashion/variegated yarns are ideal, as are ribbons, buttons and beads. Participants will also need to bring along a selection of crochet hook sizes and a notebook and pen/pencil. A small sewing kit including scissors, a knitters sewing needle, and a fine sewing needle and thread is also required.
Workshop Subject: Continental Knitting – Two-Handed Fairisle Technique
Tutor: Juliet Bernard
Date: Saturday 3rd September
Continental knitting is a technique that is so much more than just holding your yarn in your left hand. Under Juliet’s watchful eye you will be able to progress quickly to two-handed Fair Isle knitting. This workshop is suitable for knitters wanting to liberate their Fairisle and for those who have never tried this addictive technique.
Participants will need to bring 3.75/4mm long DPNs and 60cm circulars.
Workshop Subject: Designing Knits for Children
Tutor: Debbie Bliss
Date: Wednesday 28th September
Debbie will guide you through the elements of designing knitwear for babies and children. This will include charting out a very simple pattern with dropped shoulders and learning the very basic steps of compiling a pattern.
Come with an idea of what you would like to work on, it could be an image from a child’s book that you would like to place on a garment for example. Embroidery charts can also provide a source of inspiration.
Yarn and needles will be provided, however if you have particular colours you want to use bring your own yarn to avoid disappointment and coloured pencils.
Workshop Subject: Frida’s Flowers Crochet Motif
Tutor: Jane Crowfoot
Date: Saturday 15th October
Whilst working through an exclusive project designed by Jane, which only has limited availability, participants will be shown how to join in new yarn shades, how to weave in yarn ends, how to add beads and how to achieve a neat and even tension to create a really pretty flower motif which could be used as the basis for a small bag or a larger blanket project.
Participants will need to bring along a 3.5mm, 4mm & 4.5mm crochet hook * and a notebook and pen/pencil. A small sewing kit including scissors, a knitters sewing needle, and a fine sewing needle and thread is also required.
* If you are aware that you are a tight or loose crocheter please alter the hook size accordingly.
Workshop Subject: Knitted Festive Gifts
Tutor: Sarah Hazell
Date: Saturday 22nd October
A fun and relaxing workshop where you can decorate your knitting to make festive gifts.
There will be three projects on offer: Festive baubles, mini gift bags and scented sachets.
Festive Baubles – choose from self-striping sock yarn, ombre effect and traditional fairisle.
Gift Bags – these tiny drawstring bags are suitable to hang from the tree or could be used to hold sweets at the festive dinner table. String several together and you will have a lovely garland! Techniques will include beading, slipstitch colourwork and mock cables.
Scented Sachet – learn how to create a tartan effect without tears! Tiny pillows you can fill with your choice of scents.
We will be knitting in 4ply and DK weight yarns so please bring along 3mm, 3.25mm and 4mm knitting needles, scissors and a sewing up needle.
Workshop Subject: Namaqualand Flowers Crochet Motif
Tutor: Dedri Uys
Date: Wednesday 16th November
Come along to this fun workshop hosted by Dedri Uys from ‘Look What I made’, creator of the amazing Sophie’s Universe crochet along blanket.
Under Dedri’s watchful eye you will work through this lovely crochet motif using a beautiful stonewashed yarn. Techniques include back post stitches, colour changing, popcorn and cluster stitches.
Please bring along a 4mm crochet hook and a basic kit to include sewing up needle and scissors.
